People and Places
Some of the best wellness resources we have are people and the places they create to share their knowledge. Below, you’ll find a few people and places we consider to be wells of invaluable information (so much more than just “people who do pilates” or “places to do yoga!”). Scroll on and enjoy!
Patrice Abood’s mentor and friend, Rebecca Leone, is affectionately known as the “Pilates Nun”—and for good reason. This classically trained international educator is a decades-long Pilates veteran and trusted source. Rebecca runs Safe Spine Teaching Academy™—the world’s first and only comprehensive Pilates education coursework that’s scientifically-sourced, vetted, and proven to “establish a uniform spine-sparing, problem-solving, client-progressing, professional technical teaching standard.”
But what’s most important is Rebecca’s mission: “To finish [Joseph Pilates’] mission; to make sure anyone anywhere has access to and understands his method.”
Sadhana Yoga Chi – Doug Swenson
Another of Patrice’s mentors, Doug Swenson, is a master yoga practitioner who’s authored several books, including Yoga Helps, The Diet That Loves You Most, Power Yoga for Dummies, and Mastering the Secrets of Yoga Flow. Since he began studing in 1969, Doug has apprenticed under master practitioners like Dr. Ernest Wood, K. Pattabhi Jois, David Williams, Nancy Gilgoff, Ramanand Patel, and others.
Body Arts & Science (BASI)
BASI Pilates®, where Patrice completed much of her education, is one of the world’s top Pilates academies. The organization, whose name stands for “Body Arts & Science International,” maintains a reputation for academic excellence and innovation. BASI’s mission is “…to create and maintain professional standards for the teaching of the Pilates Method and to preserve and perpetuate the gift of Pilates by educating teachers of the highest caliber.”
